All About DSL Q: What is DSL? A: DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology for transmitting digital data over standard telephone lines that enables faster transmission of data than is possible with Dial-Up internet service. World Access/Qwest DSL includes internet services with transmission speeds ranging from 256 Kbps (Kilobits per second) to 7 Mbps (Megabits per second).(A kilobit is one thousand bits; a megabit is one million bits.) Q: Is DSL service available at any location? A: No. Two primary factors determine whether DSL is available at your location. First of all, your telephone line must be connected to a Central Office (telephone company switching office) that is DSL equipped. And secondly, for basic DSL like 256/256, the loop length (the length of the telephone line from the Central Office to your location) must be 15,000 feet or less. Request a DSL Loop Test to find out if DSL service is available on your phone line. Q: What if a location does not meet the loop qualification requirements? A: Unfortunately, if a location does not meet the loop qualification requirements, the subscriber cannot get the basic DSL services. World Access does offer a DSL service called IDSL which is available at locations as far as 30,000 feet from a Central Office. IDSL has a speed of 144/144 and costs substantially more than basic DSL 256/256. Q: Do I need another telephone line to get DSL services? A: No, you don't need to purchase another phone line. DSL technology enables the transmission of data signals and voice signals at the same time over a single telephone line. Qwest does, however, charge for both the telephone service and DSL line service. Q: What type of computer do I need for DSL? A: For the most part, any PC running Windows 98 and higher and any Mac running MacOS 8.5 or higher is capable of DSL Internet Access. If you are unsure of your computer's configuration, please contact a World Access DSL Consultant and ask them to evaluate your system for you. Q: Why are World Access and Qwest partners in providing DSL service? A: DSL has two components. World Access provides the Internet Access, and Qwest provides the telephone line configured to transmit the DSL signal. Q: Do I need a special modem or can I use the modem that I've been using with my Dial-Up service? A: DSL Internet Access requires a special modem. The modem can be rented from Qwest for prices starting at $5 per month, or purchased from Qwest starting at $60. Q: Do I have to connect to the DSL service each time I want to use the internet? A: No. DSL is "always on". This means that you never have to wait for a connection to be made the way you have to wait for a Dial-Up connection. Q: Can I hook up more than one computer to my DSL service? A: Yes. There are a number of different ways that multiple computers can be connected to one DSL Line, but remember, multiple computers accessing the internet at the same time may result in slower speeds.
